"If we do not know our own history, we are doomed to live it as though it were our private fate." -- Hannah Arendt, political theorist
O Lady, your breast is your field.
Inanna, your breast is your field.
Your broad field pours out plants.
Your broad field pours out grain.
Water flows from on high for your servant.
Bread flows from on high for your servant.
Pour it out for me, Inanna.
I will drink all you offer.
-- Poem of ancient Sumer

My scholarly and personal areas of interest center on exploring goddess worship and female spiritual authority, past and present. I'm particularly interested in looking at archaeological evidence that our ancestors all over the world venerated primarily female deities, and the social implications of that, both historically and in contemporary times. I'm also studying the corresponding shift from egalitarianism and matristic culture to patriarchy that seems to have begun in the Neolithic period, a trend that is traceable into the historical era in iconography, mythology, and historical records. In short, I'm interested in applying a feminist lens to the study of archaeology, religion/mythology, anthropology, and history in order to restore suppressed information about women's roles and contributions throughout the ages. I'm most of all interested in how information about female divinity, female priestesshood, and women's ertwhile centrality in cultural life can be used to help empower women today as spiritual,
economic, and social beings.
